19th of March, 2021. As I go to bed, I see a random person post a photo of a red glowing sky and the person asked: “Eruption?”. The government went out and checked, needless to say, it had started.

200m long crack in the earth had opened up. I knew I had to go there the day after. These things change rapidly, there was no time to waste. The day after, March 20th, I talked to a great friend and one of Icelands finest guides. We decided to go together at around 3PM.

We drove past vast amounts of cars on the way, across from the Blue Lagoon, that is where the government advised people to go, a terrible idea in my opinion, easily twice as long and that’s where danger comes in.

We trekked in the middle of the closed highway nr 1, which was falling apart from all the earthquakes. In blinding rain and terrible winds. Fast forward a couple hours, we reach our destination. The volcanic eruption in all it’s glory, honestly, I have never witnessed such a thing in my life. The power, the sound, the vibration, scorching heat. You felt like you could die at any moment, the earth would open up from beneath your feat. This is something that I as a professional photographer, take my chance on. And take full responsibility.

The 1.200 degree lava exploding in the air.

I like writing and talking a lot in my blogs, this time around, I will just let the photos speak for themselves. I thank you all for the absolutely amazing response I have had to my photos, they have gone viral, completely, for the first time in my life, and it feels good.

Enjoy.

Love, Rúnar.
